Description
Phanerezoan starfish of the Suborder Paxillosa in which the upper marginal plates are replaced by paxillae. The lower marginals are well developed and covered with spines. The upper surface is covered with paxillae. The tube-feet lack a terminal sucking disc, but have double ampullae. The gut lacks a pyloric caeca and an anus.

The gonads are serially arranged along the sides of each arm. In the North Sea two species of this family are found:
- Luidia ciliaris
- Luidia sarsi
