Description
The discs of these brittle stars are often covered with spines and granules, but they generally do not conceal the scales. Mouth papillae are present and are usually not contiguous with the infradental papillae. There is a single series of square teeth, no tooth papillae. A second pair of tube-feet inside the mouth edge. They have short, erect spines.

In the North Sea two species of this family are found:
- Ophiopholis aculeata
- Ophiactis balli
